UV-Filtering

Glazing of any kind provides significant protection from dust, airborne contaminants, physical damage to artwork, and various effects of UV light.

Some glass products do provide additional UV protection in the 320 to 400 nanometers range of the light spectrum (about 6% of the total solar energy of light). Even glass with the highest UV filtering does not protect art from the much larger and damaging visible light range.

Regardless of any temporary “UV filtering” capability of the glass, artwork will fade if placed in areas of direct sunlight, fluorescent light, heat or humidity. It is therefore recommended to display art in low lighting areas, out of direct sunlight, fluorescent light, heat sources and high humidity.

When displaying a framed image indoors, the exterior window glass and possibly other glass barriers offer several layers of UV filters in addition to the frame glass. Each pane of regular glass usually filters 40-50% of UV rays.

Additional UV protection in glass does not have significant added value in protecting art, yet it does make the colors less real. ®claryl does not have an additional UV coating, which results in amazing image and color clarity.
In addition, if artwork preservation is important, it is necessary to use archival matboard and mounting products. The extent that art fades also depends greatly on the quality of the paper and ink.
